Masquerade

The faeries in the Selkies kitchen have been working overtime this week, and we can announce the release of our face masque range.

Strawberry Swirl, Raspberry Ripple, Chocolate Cream and Banana Smoothie are available now, with Mango, Pineapple and other flavours to follow very soon.

Made with 100% natural ingredients, which include clays, fruits and dairy powders, just add water!

That's right, you have to add the water yourself, as our masques come in powdered form.  As the clays can absorb up to 4 times their weight in liquid, when you purchase a premixed paste you are actually paying for mostly water, preservatives, emulsifiers and stablisers…. which means what you put on your face ends up with very little nutritional value to your skin.

By having you mix the fresh paste yourself, we do not need to add any preservatives, stabilisers, artificial colours or flavours...  You get the full nutritional value of the ingredients from the second you mix it.

Needless to say, these masques draw out the impurities and excess oils from the skin, without drying it out.  For a full list of the benefits, check out the Face Masque page.

Ingredients - Cocoa Butter

A quick summary on some of our ingredients here at Selkies, today we'll look at Cocoa Butter.

Theobroma Cacao
It's been called the ultimate moisturiser, and has been used to keep skin soft and supple for centuries.  A solid at room temperature, it melts at body temperature and is readily absorbed into the skin (can be used in suppositories for this very reason).

It is one of the most stable fats there are, and contains natural antioxidants that prevent rancidity, giving it a much longer shelf life.

Cocoa Butter is often recommended for treatment of skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis, particularly as it creates a barrier between sensitive skin and the environment, while retaining moisture.  This leads to its inclusion in lip balms and salves against chapping.  It is also a common ingredient in salves and oils to prevent or treat stretchmarks.

Should I mention chocolate?

Well, chocolate made from cocoa butter, rather than cocoa solids, will have less caffeine and theobromine in it.  Also note that some companies have substituted cocoa butter for vegetable oil in an effort to reduce costs, but you wont find any of that in our snack cupboard.

We love Cocoa Butter here at Selkies, and you'll find it included in many of our products.

Weather could be better.

Ooh, it's grim out there, definitely not the weather to be making bath bombs here at Selkies.  Luckily I still have a few of each in stock.

Road tests of Auld Scrubber went well, looking forward to some interest on that one.

Now to get the marketing head on to drum up some more business.

Auld Scrubbers II

We gave a bar of Hard Auld Scrubber to a friendly local mechanic today, and are pleased to receive the two thumbs up, after it was thoroughly tested in the wash room.  It was rated higher than the current market leader!

The ground pumice, and coarse ground oatmeal really get to grips with the grime, without feeling like a handful of sand, and the Sweet Orange and Cedarwood oils are a pleasant alternative to some of the more industrial cleaners on the market.

So if your a dirty old man, filthy, or just slightly grubby, try an Auld Scrubber.

Auld Scrubbers

Today sees the release of the Selkies Auld Scrubber range.

As either a soft soap, or a hard bar, encompassing Cedar Wood and Orange essential oils, as well as being packed full of pumice and coarse ground oatmeal, it will clean the grimiest of hands.

Very soon we'll be launching a range of salves to help with those work abused paws.

Kitchen on Overdrive!

Someone's been cracking the whip in the Selkies kitchen today.

Aniseed and Vanilla Bath Bombs have rolled off the production line and into the online store.

Reminiscent of childhood sweets, and embedded with real star anise, they smell absolutely gorgeous, and like all of our bath bombs, they are great for the skin too.

Just make sure you clear the plughole when you're finished ;)

News from the Kitchen

Research and Development is almost complete on our exciting new Peppermint Soap here at Selkies.

A companion to our refreshing Cool Mint Lip Balm, we will soon be developing a Bath Bomb and a Body Buttercream to complete the set.

Soon it wont only be your breath that is minty fresh.

Big Bath Bomb Blunder

It's been so wet here recently, with all of the rain we've been having, that some of our bath bombs are starting to fizz before they are properly set!

And, to add to the general kitchen confusion, it only seems to be the strawberry ones that are affected.

Even altering the recipe slightly, to give them less of a hair trigger has had no effect.

I've managed to save one from eight, thank goodness, as I have an order waiting.

I may have to investigate dehumidifiers for the Selkies kitchen.

Oatmeal and Almond Soap

The first to be added to the Selkies product range, was our popular Oatmeal and Almond Soap.

Creamy and moisturising, the finely ground Oatmeal and Almonds, mixed with our special blend of oils and butters, delivers a very gentle exfoliation.

The Shea butter, used in many of our range, has been used in Africa for generations as a rich moisturiser, and is a favourite here at Selkies.

If you haven't yet tried one of our soaps, it's a great introduction.

New products available.

Our growing range now includes the following new releases for you to try...

Bergamont, Lemongrass & Calendula Soap
Lemon & Poppy Seed Soap

Coconut & Almond Soap

The Coconut and Almond soap completes our Coconut range (for now), which also includes a whipped Body Buttercream, and a Bath Bomb.

Who we are

Selkies could be considered as the fund raising arm of Hogswatch, the East Kent rescue and rehabilitation centre for Hedgehogs and other native wildlife.

As the centre is privately owned and run, it does not receive any charitable donations, and therefore we sought other avenues of fund raising.

With Selkies, you get a great product, for a reasonable price, and the profits are used to further our Hogswatch activities.
